Read more In the area of self-sufficiency, Caring Hands for Africa seeks to empower
households and reduce poverty levels. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS)
“2019 Poverty and Inequality in Nigeria” report, 83 million Nigerians, live below the
country’s poverty line.
By empowering the people in rural communities in
Nigeria, we seek to achieve a ripple effect. Increased productivity from the farm will lead
to food sufficiency and increased incomes for households. This will ensure that families can
get adequate nutrition and money to meet their other needs such as shelter, clothing,
medication and education.
We support farmers in accessing farm tools including
hoes, spades, wheelbarrows, watering cans, axes, among others. With the proper tools, the
farmers are trained on proper agronomy practices and use these tools to improve their
production.
We also encourage people in villages to engage in small livestock
farming to provide meat for their household and to increase their household income.
Specifically, we provide the farmers with their startup stock of goats. Farmers are required
to work within groups where we supply several members with female goats and a male goat that
is shared among the members. The advantage is that the goats multiply rapidly and are easy
to maintain.
Farmers are also provided with a stock of hybrid poultry for their
farms. The advantage of this type of chicken is that they use less food and produce more
eggs. These birds are handy and easy to care for. These eggs and chickens will provide
additional income, and nutrition for the families.
